Side Effects of Alcoholism

Side effects of alcoholism are very dangerous and life threatening. In most cases, the following could happen to an individual if they continue down a path of being addicted to alcohol:

  • Distributing the function and structure in the nervous system making the ability to consume, process and deal with the information that is given to them.
  • Alcohol can also cause the mouth to get inflamed as well as the stomach and esophagus causing cancer in these particular areas especially with drinkers who also smoke on a regular basis.
  • To much alcohol will destroy brain cells and could lead to brain damage.
  • Harm the vision, damage sex functions, slow circulation, it can also be the grounds of malnutrition and water retention in the body.
  • Alcoholism may cause irregular heartbeats, cause high blood pressure, heart damage and heart attacks.
  • Large amounts of alcohol can interfere with the level of oxygen supply causing a blackout when totally drunk.

Another side effect of alcoholism is having liver damage. The liver is made to break down a large portion of the alcohol that is taken in but this will overuse the liver causing malfunctions and disorders to occur making the liver have the primary location of alcohol damage. There are three stages of liver damage:

  • Stage one – the liver will become enlarged causing liver cells to penetrate and have disfigured fatty tissue.
  • Stage two – alcoholic hepatitis – this is where liver cells will get inflamed and swell and will eventually die from the amount of alcohol that is consumed by an individual.
  • Stage three – cirrhosis – this is when fibrous scar tissue is formed and then causing the flow of the blood to hinder through the liver.
